Except she doesn’t know whether he’ll take her back. And she’s about to discover that the past won’t let her go so easily.

Now it’s coming after them both.

She’s been through a hell far worse than he’d ever imagined, but one thing is certain. He will love her until he draws his last breath—and won’t let anything or anyone take her away from him ever again. Her moment of reckoning was here.

Swallowing, Bella stood.

Creed froze, his attention riveted on her.

She forced herself to step toward the stairs, into the glare of the porch lantern that suddenly felt like a spotlight in an interrogation room.

The sight of him almost made her knees buckle. Tall, strong, his dark hair cut short, angular jaw clean shaven, and those incredible, piercing gray eyes locked on her.

Somehow she remained standing, didn’t move as he muttered “I gotta go” to whomever he was speaking to and lowered the phone, staring at her the whole time.

“Bella,” he croaked out.

Drawing a breath, somehow resisting the urge to run to him and fling her arms around him, she found her voice. This was so hard. The hope. The fear. The chasm of space and time that had divided them. “Hi.”

He didn’t move. “What are you doing here?”

She deserved the cautious tone, the wary expression, even though she’d been secretly praying for a joyous reunion. But it still hurt. “I know I shouldn’t have just shown up like this, but…” Her voice caught. Dammit, she could barely force the rest out. “I didn’t know where else to go,” she blurted in a shaky whisper.

Creed stared at her for another few agonizing seconds, then dropped the backpack slung over his broad shoulder and rushed toward her. An instant later she was being pulled to his chest, those strong, achingly familiar arms closing around her. Holding her tight. So tight, as if he was afraid she might vanish if he let her go.

Bella grabbed the back of his jacket with both fists and held on, a tidal wave of relief crashing over her. She didn’t deserve this response or kindness from him, but she’d ached for it with every cell of her being. Her knees wobbled, the strength of his grip the only thing keeping her from crumpling to the ground at his feet.

She choked back a sob and pressed her face into his chest, the familiar smell of his cologne triggering a thousand bittersweet memories as he held her.

His face was buried in her hair, his grip almost bruising. “Bella,” he rasped out, his voice unsteady. “Oh, Christ, where have you been?”
